| According to an estimate there are more than 2000 Management institutes in India offering management courses. Add to this a pretty hefty numbers in UK, USA and now Australia and here you are - a thoroughly confused young student floundering to decide on the institute that you should select even at the application stage. |

| How to select a management Institute? |
| We think that a more appropriate question is how not to select a management institute? There are any numbers of publications, each conducting its own "surveys" to give rankings to various management institutes. However if you collect all these rankings together and look at them your confusion would deepen as you would find three different institute and No. 1 and this differences would increase as you go down the rankings. |

| So how do we select a management Institute? |
| Well basically one needs to decide individual preferences and then look at each B-School as to what it has to offer. Some of the parameters that we think are important are these |

| Brand Equity |
| Lets face it! This is going to stick to you for a long time to come. It has little to do with what you would get from the institute academically - as it is a function of what earlier students received from it and also how they performed in the real world out there. |

| Placements |
| No prizes for guessing this one! All of us are looking at management career because we want a well-paid job that offers us challenges, status etc. |

| Infrastructure |
| This seems odd but consider this - almost all institutes offer similar courses, refer to similar books and probably even use the same methodologies in conjunction with almost same sets of cases (at least for the fundamental courses). So what makes a particular B-School better than the other. In our opinion - two things one infrastructure and the second we would refer to in the next point. One thing that a B-School should develop in its students is an ability to think Big. Environment plays a big role here - if you see the big libraries, big computer-domes, big hostels, big projects and big events conducted at the top B-Schools you would know why they supply top managers to the country. |

| Academic Environment |
| This is normally a forgotten parameter - probably because there is no way to rationally judge this among institutes. Still take the trouble to go through the brochures of institutes and know whom you would be dealing with. At the end of the day what is going to stick with you lifelong are the skills (and not subjects) that the institute could develop in its wards. |
